Lay Evangelism Let's keep the main thing the main thing. The church exists to seek those who don't yet have a saving relationship with Jesus, and to lead them to Him. This is done in many different ways. See where we focus. Rob "Turtle" on His Harley ![]() Evangelism is the purpose of the Church, and lay evangelism is the call of God on every member of His body. This purpose was met at the Sandy Creek Church near Brockport. This call was answered by Rob “Turtle” Turlington of the Rochester Genesee Park Church. Rob was raised a Seventh-day Adventist, but in his youth separated himself from the church and from God. After serving in the Vietnam War, he returned to the US and a life of motorcycles, drugs and alcohol. It was in the motorcycle club that Rob received the nickname “Turtle.” Seven years ago, God called Rob back to a new relationship. He and his wife, Sharon were baptized on a Sabbath morning and married in the same afternoon. Since that time, God has been preparing them both for the ministry they have now begun. The evangelistic meetings in Sandy Creek were the first of three phases of the Year of Evangelism for Rochester. They had three goals: save souls; bring back missing members; and train more lay members for evangelism. Phase two includes conducting up to 20 series of lay-led evangelistic meetings throughout Rochester in March of 2007. They, too, will have the same three goals. They will lead up to phase three in September, 2007. During that time, lay people from the churches in Rochester, and across the North American Division are being invited to preach for one of at least fifty series to be conducted throughout Rochester. Rob Preaching at Sandy Creek in His Club 'Colors' ![]() Rob only began to preach about a month before his evangelistic debut at Sandy Creek. “I was really out of my comfort zone,” Rob reports, “but in the end, it was very much worth while. What a blessing it was to me!” Sharon sang for the meetings and felt her own relationship with Jesus grow stronger as she ministered through her God-given gifts. As a result of the very-low-budget meetings, two people requested baptism, two missing members began coming back to church and prayer meeting, and nineteen Adventist lay people from five SDA churches in the area came to the training meetings to get ready to be part of phase two. There is a long way to go. Much prayer is needed, and more lay people are needed to serve. Rob and Sharon are ready to do their part. “We wouldn’t miss it!” Home | About Us | Devotional | Calendar | Ministries | News | Pastor's Message | Bible Study | Media | Contact Us |
